California Yampah (Perideridia californica)

This is an edible flowering perennial native to California. The leaves begin to grow with the winter rains, and the flowers bloom in late spring. The white flowers attract lots of native pollinators. During summer, the plants go dormant and you won't see them again until fall. Like other yampah species, this plant has edible tubers, but this species has a single long tuber. The seeds are edible, with a flavor like caraway, and the young leaves are edible.

Aside from the edibility, this is also just an easy native plant to grow in the garden. I plant seeds in the fall and find that they germinate very easily

Grown by Mike Jennings in 2025.

Packets: ~200 seeds.
