Perennial Wheat (x Tritipyrum aaseae) or (x Agrotriticum spp.)

This intergeneric cross is a mix Salish Blue and Tim Peters' Perennial Wheat Grex. I purchased both of these from The Experimental Farm Network. I planted them side by side and mixed the resulting grain together. Both plots proved to be very similar. They flowered and ripened seed at the same time. Both have over-wintered well in my Northern California climate.

'Salish Blue' was developed at Washington State by crossing the wheat variety 'Madsen' with a hybrid between 'Chinese Spring' wheat and rush wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum). Listed as: x Tritipyrum aaseae.

'Tim Peters Perennial Wheat Grex' was offered by EFN as a mix of Tim Peters 'Ezeer' perennial wheat, and a couple of other perennial wheats of unknown origin. This is also a cross between Triticum and Thinopyrum. Listed as: x Agropyrum spp.

This wheat is slightly more difficult to thresh than regular wheat, but I was still able to do it by hand. As I continue to grow it, I will select for easier threshing, while also maintaing the perennial growth habit.
