Strawberry Hedgehog Cactus (Echinocereus englemannii)

This California native cactus grows in the Mojave Desert. It has large purple flowers in spring, and grows clusters of spiny stems up to 24" tall. This cactus is very cold-hardy and can survive temps down to 10F. It sets delicious fruits in late summer. The flowers attract small native bees.

I had pollinated these flowers with pollen from Echinocereus pentalophus, E. morricalli, and E. gentryi, so these seeds may produce some interesting interspecies hybrids. E. englemannii is known to be occasionally self-fertile, so you may also get some selfed seedlings.

Grown by Mike Jennings in 2025.

Packets of ~100 seeds.
