Brodiaea californica 'Babylon'
This is an edible flowering bulb native to California. The leaves begin to grow with the first winter rains, and the flowers bloom in May. During summer, the plants go dormant and you won't see them again until fall. The corms can be harvested while dormant and eaten after roasting or boiling. They produce small cormlets around the base of the main corm that can be planted back into the soil, and will quickly grow into mature corms.
'Babylon' is a Dutch selection with flowers that are more pink than the typical B. californica. I bought my original corms from a Dutch bulb nursery, and have been growing them in my garden for years.
Grown by Mike Jennings in 2024.
Packets: 1gram of seeds.
